Emma is trying to get used to her new cast with a toe plate to protect her toes in the winter from getting cold or wet or frozen in the snow. Its a welcome relief but she has to get used to it because she used to her long toes just hanging out of her cast. She's still got a leg cut out of her jeans to accommodate her cast and her sneaker is flat while her cast heel elevates her foot, so she uses a cane to balance herself and she struggles on stairs and into a mass transit bus after waiting at a stop.
