Vika stood trembling before us, her naked body adorned with the Holy Markers of Antioch. She was not a virgin, but Greenhead had deemed her the only suitable sacrifice. Mya and I watched as Indica applied the last of the markers onto her soft skin, leaving a faint golden glow in their wake. The air was deathly still, save for the flickering torches that cast eerie shadows across the sacrificial pool.
"Are you ready, Vika?" Indica asked, her voice filled with a mixture of fear and reverence.
Vika's eyes were wide with terror, but she nodded bravely, steeling herself for what was to come.
With a final nod from Mya, we led Vika to the edge of the pool. She hesitated for a moment, looking back at us with pleading eyes, but we knew there was no turning back now. We gently pushed her into the water, where she submerged herself completely.
The pool was dark and murky, but as Vika sank deeper, a faint light began to emanate from her body. It grew brighter and brighter until it was blinding, and soon the entire pool was illuminated by her sacrificial offering.
We watched in awe as Vika gave herself to Greenhead, the God of the Deep. She took her final breaths, her body dissolving into the water, becoming one with the god. And as quickly as it began, it was over. The pool returned to its dark, still state, and Vika was gone. We could only hope that her sacrifice had pleased Greenhead and that he would spare our village from his wrath for another year.
