Sara's family is desperately poor, her step-father has been out of work for over a year, her siblings have a multitude of health problems, her step-mother works as a maid but it's not nearly enough to feed and clothe the family so it was decided that Sara would be sold to a wealthy man who would keep her as his personal pet.
