Hemp rope does an interesting thing when it gets wet. People think it actually shrinks but what it's doing is swelling. With determination. I have many friends who learned this the hard way. It swells so much that not only does the tie tighten a lot but the knots swell so much that you can't untie them. They end up having to cut the ropes. This can be dangerous.
