On a February night 1946 a disturbance in a room of the Strand Palace Hotel made the assistant manager and the head porter witnesses to a bizarre scene: a fair haired young woman lay face-down and naked on the bed and standing over her was a naked man wielding a cane. The woman's buttocks left no doubt as to what had been happening: she had been, at the least, caned as severely as any schoolboy within the limits of English law. To the astonishment of those who had come to her assistance, she flatly refused to prefer charges against 'Captain Armstrong'. The would-be rescuers were left to wonder about Margery Gardner's situation. Had she been lured to the hotel under the pretext of a night of romantic passion and then been to submit to the cane? Or had she, perhaps, known what would happen? If the second guess was correct, had she a greed to be caned merely for the man's enjoyment - or was she what 1940's slang called a 'slapperat', who derived sexual excitement from it herself? Whatever the case may have been, a few minutes later the victim and her assailant made their departure apparently on the best of terms." This is a quote from a journal of the late 1940s explaining the word Slapperat. In our story line here, Tamsin is portrayed as a slapperat, which in reality is what the young actress who portrays her really is. In this short story, Tamsin receives three strokes of the cane from the housemaster for turning up late. However this is a frustrating situation. She goes off to see Frobisher, who is both head of house and her boyfriend. He is quite happy to give her a further dozen strokes of the cane then satisfy her sexual urges. (CA214)
