Walking is extremely painful in this thing with both her ankle and big toe immobile and she must use crutches. Her nerve pain has made it impossible to wear any other footwear on that foot and she too is waiting to hear how long she will need to be in her mismatched footwear. They introduce themselves and stare forlornly at each others odd footwear commenting on their vulnerable bare toes, people's stares and their uncomfortable experiences in general. One by one they are called into the doctor's office and the verdict is grim, weeks more for each of them in their respective odd and mismatched footwear. Having become more acquainted in their misery they each crutch off together for a little shopping to make themselves feel better after first checking out the window to insure the weather is not too poor or cold to go out half-barefoot.
