He ties the naive girl VERY tightly, leaving her to struggle and improvise her way through her audition, thrashing about as she tries to free herself, just as the character in the film would do. Of course, the director is also concerned with her ability to enunciate on camera, and the best way to test that is to stuff a big fat ball into her mouth! After all, if HE can't understand the girl as she struggles to get her dialogue out past the huge rubber mass filling her mouth, no one else will either! Gurgling, drooling, wiggling and squirming, Rachel uses every ounce of her strength in her efforts to make herself understood. Finally, the director is convinced she is the girl for the job, and Rachel, finding she enjoyed the audition VERY much, suggests that maybe she and the director can meet privately to discuss her...motivation...in greater detail!
