Jack is sent to Mr. Roberts for several offences of deliberate disobedience. Mr. Roberts orders him to removehis trousers and underwear and bend over a stool for a cold caning on his bare bum.

Mr. Roberts uses the first few strokes to judge aim and but then begins the real punishment.

Jack receives 40 strokes of the cane, hard and fast, building in severity, until he is grunting and gasping in agony.... in fact he gets an extra couple ofstrokes, as they say, for 'good luck, though with this punishment, Jack knows his good luck has run out and he gets the caning he deserves...
