Violet is being held captive, and the man keeping her in restraints has been paid to keep her there until he receives notice to let her go. Violet is seated on a chair, handcuffed and shackled, the two chains connected by a third via padlocks. She is not going anywhere. Her captor wanders in to make sure she is alright, and informs her that she will be there for another day, at least. Violet protests at this treatment but there is nothing she can do about it. Soon, she is left alone again, and she resumes her futile struggling.
