The prisoners are unable to see these puppets, the real objects, that pass behind them. What the prisoners see and hear are shadows and echoes cast by objects that they do not see.

Religion is nothing more than shadows, echoes, and whispers behind your back. Designed to keep your heart full of fear and prevent your mind from reaching past the depths of what it allows you to believe. Should you journey past the stretch of religious boundary of approval, you are threatened with horned and cloven hooved demons who would consume you whole.

But it is the demon who frees you.

Religion is a farce, a lie, a tactic used to keep you afraid and obedient.
