If the boots have outsoles with deep treads arranged in a convenient design, little rocks and all types of small debris can get stuck in them while you walk on a trail or road covered with fine gravel. After your walk on the gravel, you can start walking on an asphalt road and all the debris and rocks already stuck in your boots will make noise as you crush them on the floor with each step you take, while you're "unaware" that they got trapped under your shoes.
