The film is shot from under the stairs. Underneath the stairs is a storage area and the only light that comes into it is through the cracks in the stairs. You cant tell from the hallway weather someone is under the stairs or not. There is also the loud sound of a machine in the background, which muffles any sounds coming from under the stairs.
