This seems to be the climax of Alanna's illness and Alanna is falling apart. She is lying on the couch wrapped in a blanket coughing and trying to catch her breath. Alanna tries to find a position in which she can breathe more easily, but all to no avail, her breathing is labored and she constantly coughs.
