In this era of the pandemic, social distancing, and heightened safety guidelines, robot prototypes have been developed to replace their former human counterparts in close contact service positions for the health and safety of human customers, such as the fembot flight attendant prototype in this video. She has been programmed to be as human as possible in her personality and mannerisms, and is unaware of the fact that she is not human in order to keep the airline customers more comfortable with her smiling presence on the flight. The major issue however is that she is only a prototype. She has not undergone the rigorous testing they would have normally put her under prior to her first takeoff, but these are not normal times, so her “launch” was pushed forward out of desperation and necessity. As you may have guessed, it doesn’t go so well.

“I’m so excited for my very first flight. Yes, I just got this job. This is going to be my first time in the air as a flight attendant! Where was I working before? Hm, I believe I was...working in a factory...” She smiles assuredly after searching her memories. She’s prompted to go through security and when she enters the machine, she’s struck by electrical interference, causing her to falter backwards with a blank stare and mechanical movements. The interference has caused a glitch in her systems and she begins repeating loops and phrases programmed for the flight.

“Ladies & Gentleman, the captain has turned on the fasten seatbelt sign. Please return to your seats and fasten your seatbelts as we prepare for takeoff....as we prepare for takeoff...” She smiles as she stares ahead with glassy eyes, going through her repeated motions and phrases. Then she comes out of the programmed loop and tries to reason why she said those phrases. “I guess I’ve been practicing so much that I’m just starting to mutter them out--Please return your seatbacks and tray tables to their full upright positions. We are about to take off.” She’s moving like a glitchy animatronic with stiff movements as she says that programmed loop before she starts to return to her human mode. “See what I mean? That was a little strange though...” She blinks curiously, and laughs.

“Acting like a robot? Oh, you joker. Haha. I’m not a robot. I probably just have something on me that I forgot to remove. My skeleton is not made of metal.” She repeats a laugh a few times before freezing for a moment. She then assures the TSA agent (who has not been made aware of the fembot prototype) that she is a human flight attendant and that she has no issues with going through the machine again, but when she does, the electrical interference makes things even worse. It seems that every time she tries to enter the machine, her malfunctioning gets worse and worse, stripping her down to her basest programming. She moves erratically in stiff mechanical movements repeating motions and programmed phrases, and her voice reverts to a robotic electronic sound as she comes in and out of her human mode programming between glitches and freezes.

“Error. Error. Error. System Overload. Shutdowwwwwnnnnnn...” Finally the glitching becomes so bad that she triggers a shutdown to try to reboot and correct the issue. Her body falls forward and freezes with wide eyes and a slack mouth. The rebooting process begins and her eyes light up to show the progress as she starts up and loads her programming. When the process is complete, her blank glassy eyes blink and personality returns to her features as she has entered her human mode, and she is confused about what just happened.

“Excuse me? I was not acting like a robot. That’s silly.” She assures the agent. “Now if you don’t mind, I’d like to make my way through security. I’m going to be late for my first day.” She makes her way through the machine but falters back again as she’s hit with an electric jolt...she moves jerkily with blank eyes before “life” returns to her face, though her body is still moving erratically and mechanically. “What is...what is...?” But that human concern only lasts a moment for in an instant her voice then reverts back to the monotone robotic sound and her eyes stare blankly ahead. The human mode has left the programming, so to speak.

She repeats her flight attendant lines in the robotic voice with stiff jerky movements before coming to a complete stop. In the freeze, she seems to attempt another open of her human persona programming, only her voice still has a bit of an electronic edge and her movements and face are still very stiff. “If you don’t mind, I would like to be on my way. I don’t want to be late for my first--first--first--first flight.” She twitches and gets stuck in another programmed loop before attempting to walk through security, and when she does, she moves stiff and heavily...and she gets zapped...again...

This time, there’s no coming back. Her movements are completely erratic as she squats up and down and turns this way and that. She’s a fembot on the fritz: an erratic electronic. She glitches and fizzles and triggers an emergency shut-down in an attempt to preserve her system, but once she falls forward and freezes in the glassy-eyed slack-mouthed stare, her maintenance mode is triggered and her faceplates open, exposing her voice box and hardware and lighting up her eyes. Electricity is still zapping her internal parts. Once her faceplates finally close, she doesn’t reboot. She remains frozen there, and the TSA agent is to trigger an alarm to call for help to remove this very obvious robot (who was so very certain she was human) from causing a back-up in the airport security. It turns out this fembot was just not ready yet to take flight.
