Lettie is a pious young woman who regularly performs her sacrament of penance. The sting of the whip, thud of the holy book, and burn of wax fills her with exultation. The only thing she can do with these feelings is build them to a climax, as she is filled with the holy spirit and strokes herself into religious hysteria.
