John Marsh is attempting a dangerous swamp crossing. He is taking a shortcut that is too shallow to float his boat, so he has to navigate the deep, treacherous mud, pulling his boat behind him. The bottom is unpredictable at best, and non-existent at worst. Normally, he can rely on his buoyancy to keep him afloat as he slogs, crawls and swims through the sucking mud.
