Doug is into the clay pit with his wrists tied in front of him and his ankles tied to a tree (off camera), and his genitals tied to a suspension point over the clay pit. The clay is so thick, there is no hope of freeing his arms, and he must hold his hips up to avoid hanging on his genitals, so he can't avoid slowly sinking deeper, getting more and more hopelessly stuck.
