The first official sink of the spring demands the sacrifice of some new, white article of clothing. This year it was a white pair of bikini bottoms. This is a slow, ritualistic sink in the deep swamp mud that culminates in total immersion, while standing completely vertical with toes pointed down in the thick, bottomless mud. After a slow descent and complete immersion, there is some struggling at the surface, gasping for air in the grip of the mud.
