When examining the rectum and sigmoid (terminal parts of the intestine), it is called rectosigmoidoscopy; when the remaining parts of the colon are also studied (a little higher up) it is called colonoscopy. For the the endoscope is used, that is a flexible tube with a diameter of about a finger with a light in the initial part, which is traced by introducing it from the anal canal. It is an invasive test and can be bothersome but not painful.
