To my surprise, no one seemed to have noticed. Or at least, they all pretended not to, an embarrassed smile plastered on their faces.
Maybe the thick fabric of the pants had muffled the sound, or maybe the background music was loud enough to cover it. Either way, no one had blinked. I sighed in relief.
I no longer felt comfortable in that store. On my way out, I met the gaze of a lady who was staring at me with an ambiguous smile. Maybe she had heard. Or maybe not. I'll never know.
But one thing was for sure: that was the last time I'd eat beans before going shopping.

Un brivido di imbarazzo mi percorse la schiena. Ero nel negozio di abbigliamento così chic, con un vestito che mi stava divinamente, quando la sentii arrivare. Una pressione crescente, un gorgoglio sinistro proveniente dalle profondità del mio intestino. Sapevo cosa significava.
Cercavo di trattenerla, ma era una battaglia persa in partenza. Il mio stomaco brontolava come un vulcano in eruzione. Stringendo i denti, pregai che se ne andasse in silenzio, un piccolo sbuffo inavvertibile. Invece, con mio sommo orrore, esplose con la forza di un tuono.
Il suono rimbalzò sulle pareti del negozio, amplificato dallo spazio ristretto. Un suono profondo, volgare, inconfondibile. Ero mortificata. Immaginai le commesse che si scambiavano occhiate divertite, i clienti che si giravano a guardare con aria di disapprovazione. Volevo solo sprofondare.
Con mia sorpresa, nessuno sembrava aver notato nulla. O almeno, facevano tutti finta di niente, con un sorriso imbarazzato stampato sul volto.
Forse il tessuto spesso dei pantaloni avevano attutito il suono, o forse la musica di sottofondo era abbastanza alta da coprirlo. In ogni caso, nessuno aveva battuto ciglio. Sospirai di sollievo.
Non mi sentivo più a mio agio in quel negozio. Uscendo, incrociai lo sguardo di una signora che mi fissava con un sorriso ambiguo. Forse aveva sentito. O forse no. Non lo saprò mai.
Ma una cosa era certa: quella era l'ultima volta che mangiavo fagioli prima di andare a fare shopping.
