Spring, of course, is the worst. As soon as the trees start to bloom, my eyes become red and itchy, my nose runs incessantly and I sneeze so hard that the walls shake. The sunny, warm days that everyone looks forward to after the long winter are a nightmare for me. I have to barricade myself in the house, with the windows closed and the air purifier turned on full blast.
But summer gives me no respite either. The cut grass, the pollen of the grasses, the mold spores... every breath is a pain. I give up trips to the countryside, barbecues with friends, walks at sunset. Even a simple evening at the pizzeria can turn into an ordeal, if they choose to use fresh flowers as decoration.
And when autumn arrives, with its dry leaves and the wind that lifts them in the air, my symptoms return. I have to carry tissues with me everywhere, and antihistamines have become my best friends. Winter, then, brings with it dust mites and pet hair, and I must obsessively clean the house.

Il mio nome è Nicoletta e sono una prigioniera nella mia stessa casa. Non fraintendermi, amo il mio appartamento, con le sue grandi finestre che danno sul parco e il giardino fiorito. Ma da marzo a ottobre, raramente mi avventuro fuori. Sono una di quelle persone sfortunate che soffrono di allergie stagionali... tutto l'anno.
La primavera, ovviamente, è la peggiore. Appena gli alberi iniziano a fiorire, i miei occhi diventano rossi e pruriginosi, il naso cola e starnutisco così forte da far tremare i muri. Le giornate soleggiate e tiepide, che tutti aspettano con ansia dopo il lungo inverno, per me sono un incubo. Devo barricarmi in casa, con le finestre chiuse e il purificatore d'aria acceso al massimo.
Ma anche l'estate non mi dà tregua. L'erba tagliata, i pollini delle graminacee, le spore della muffa... ogni respiro è una sofferenza. Rinuncio alle gite in campagna, alle grigliate con gli amici, alle passeggiate al tramonto. Persino una semplice serata in pizzeria può trasformarsi in un calvario, se scelgono di usare fiori freschi come decorazione.
E quando arriva l'autunno, con le sue foglie secche e il vento che le solleva in aria, i miei sintomi si ripresentano. Devo portare con me fazzoletti ovunque, e gli antistaminici sono diventati i miei migliori amici. L'inverno, poi, porta con sé acari della polvere e peli di piccoli amici domestici, che mi costringono a pulire la casa ossessivamente.
