Beatrice is concentrating too much on the fight she had with her boyfriend to see the open drainage ditch before she walks right into it and twists her ankle badly. By the time she crawls out of it she is a one shoe girl. She does everything she can to try and protect her soft naked sole from the the summer cooked pavement and loose sharp gravel. She gimps, hops, tippy toes, any thing she can... Well one good thing has come out of it as she gimps along on her foot -- at least her mind is off her boyfriend!
