One day she learned that the notorious Chaos - villain, mob boss, and all-round scourge of the city - was hiding out in an abandoned waterfront warehouse. When she raced over there and confronted Chaos, he tried to overpower her in combat. Unfortunately for him, the Scarlet Butterfly proved to be more of a match than he expected. Nimble, smart, and tenacious - she out-grappled Chaos and delivered a flurry of punches that whipped past his defenses and left him dazed and bewildered. A knee thudded into to his gut for good measure, and The Scarlet Butterfly had him lying on the floor - crumpled, winded, and beaten. It was an humiliating end to Chaos' criminal reign. Delivered to the police, tried and convicted in court, he was sentenced to twenty-years in the State Penitentiary. There, day and night, he brooded on what the Scarlet Butterfly had done to ruin him. While he was languishing behind bars, she was fast becoming the darling of the city. The thought of her benefiting from his downfall nauseated Chaos. Soon he was overcome with a fierce need for revenge. He wanted to rain on the Scarlet Butterfly's parade. He wanted to bring her low, humiliate her, make her pay, subject her to horrors that would shatter her mind and leave her haunted for the rest of her life. And so it was that he came up with a plan to make all those things happen. It centered around a special body-immobilizing device that he had invented some years before. Although Chaos himself would not be able to use it on the Scarlet Butterfly, he knew of a loyal ex-goon who would do it on his behalf. When this goon paid him a visit at the penitentiary, Chaos filled him on every detail of the plan. The goon was to lure the Scarlet Butterfly into a trap, ambush her using the special device, tie up her while she remained then subject her to a horrible sexual ordeal. Chaos knew this would hit the Scarlet Butterfly where it most hurt: in her sense of self. Brought low, defiled, humiliated, she would never be a proud do-gooder again. As for the goon, he relished the task he had been given. In fact, he was so enthusiastic that he went straight back to Chaos apartment, found the special device, picked a nice location for an ambush, placed a phony call to the Scarlet Butterfly, and hid in wait for her. His message reached the Scarlet Butterfly at her home - where she was dressing as her alter-ego in preparation for a day of conventional work in an office. Immediately her mind switched into superheroine mode. Dashing into a nearby closet, she changed into her costume, and came out full of crime-fighting purpose. She then used her tracking-watch to lead her to the exact location of the call. This turned out to be a mansion in the country. However, the Scarlet Butterfly managed to search only a couple of its rooms before the goon sprang out on her from behind. With a surprised gasp she whirled around, fists raised in readiness for combat. But the goon had no intention of mixing it up with her the way Chaos did. Instead, from a safe distance, he aimed the special device at her chest and pulled the trigger. Briefly there came a high-pitched sound. Then the Scarlet Butterfly staggered as she felt herself zapped by something. A moment later, she collapsed in a senseless heap. When she came eventually woke up, she discovered that her wrists and ankles had been manacled and then chained together behind her back. The Scarlet Butterfly had never felt so vulnerable or afraid. She cried out and tried to writhe free of her restraints, but it was all to no avail. Indeed, even in the midst of her misery, the goon came to her and started to take his liberties. Masked and gloved to hide his face and his fingerprints, he presented a mysterious, sinister figure. The Scarlet Butterfly trembled and whimpered helplessly at the first intrusive touches of his hand along her legs, up her stomach, over her breasts. Gone was her superheroine's confidence. Now she was a meek victim. The goon knew it, and enjoyed himself all the more.
