She has no idea whats wrong with her but something doesnt feel right. Her step-sister, Ashley, tells her to lie down and rest. As shes starting to lay down, she collapses without warning onto the floor. Panicked, Ashley shakes her, but her step-sister is unresponsive. She shakes her, calling her name, telling her to wake up, rolling her over. She checks her pulse, and then opens her robe and starts to give her CPR. She administers chest compressions, trying to keep her calm even though its really hard to see her step-sister like this. Pinching her nose between her thumb and forefinger with one hand and opening her mouth with the other, she breathes into her sisters mouth. Her belly inflates, but shes still unresponsive. Ashley repeats this procedure several times, with no real results. So she calls 9-11 and asks them to send someone. The dispatcher asks if she knows CPR. She does; their step-father was a paramedic. Instead of wasting time trying to send someone, Ashley digs out the defibrillator from her dads old things and has the dispatcher walk her through the process over the phone. She attaches the AED pads to Kates chest, and continues the procedure. She keeps checking her pulse intermittently, and keeps trying the defibrillator. Kates body arches with the electric pulse, and Ashley continues administering CPR. Relentless in her endeavor to save her beloved step-sister, she doesnt give up. After almost 15 minutes, she finally wakes up, gasping. The sisters hold each other, one grateful to be alive, the other humbled by this experience.
