Going forward is easy for a pony. If it has to go sideways or do some special tricks, it gets hard for the pony. The hooves have to move in a different direction. This unfamiliar sequence of mothion causes the pony to exhaust faster. When i ride my pony, it is already hard for it - when I do dressage training with my pony, it is especially hard. Yes, i managed to exhaust my pony with my kind of dressage training. But I already trained it well - just the threat of punishment caused the pony to regain enough strenth to continue the dressage training.
