Down in the bowls of Much Beating Castle, Sir Giles has his snug or hideaway. One day he discovers that his spendthrift wife has excelled herself. Down in the snug he feels free to spank her soundly. But before it has got properly underway, Maria, her ladyship's maid, bursts in and is most disapproving of the scene. It is only when Sir Giles shows his annoyance that the maid withdraws and allows Sir Giles to get on with a job long over due. Finally the wretched wife leaves, sobbing her heart out. (SP137)
