Then Judge Brown gives him another 6. So far the punishment has been straightforward hard caning but now Her Honour introduces a fascinating twist. She tells WPC west to get another cane so that both ladies have canes. The Judge is left handed and the WPC is right handed so you might expect that they will now cane him alternate strokes, but no. Judge Brown tells Jones they are going to play a game. She will cane him and he must count her strokes, but at the same time WPC West will cane him, at random, and he must count her strokes separately, so he has to keep 2 counts going. Any mistakes and they will start again. If he fails to reach the end of 6 strokes each, he will go to jail as well as having been caned. She says they will start with a practice run. After 3 strokes he gets it wrong and they start again. This time he goes wrong on strokes 4 and 5 but is foolish enough to laugh when he does it. DONT, WHACK, LAUGH, WHACK, 2 mighty strokes from the judge and then 3 more equally severe strokes as she scolds him. They start again from stroke number one. He correctly counts 2 strokes from Judge Brown and 2 from WPC West but then instead of calling the next stroke as 3 he calls it as 1. They start again and this time he finally manages to call all 12 strokes correctly, but it is not over yet. Judge Brown likes to finish her caning with 6 rapid strokes delivered without a pause between each stroke. Jones however was obviously not expecting any more and the first stroke catches him by surprise making him dip right down. Judge Brown warns him to stay absolutely still and she starts again.
