Tiffany returns from her shirt-changing errand via the back alley; she detours around the near impenetrable concrete walkway between the Garage and the prickly hedge, crosses the Backyard, muddies her bare feet by accidentally walking through the earthen Mudpit, and comes to rest by the Bell near the Landing and Back Door. She gives the clapper a sharp pull, and the intensity of the sound makes her ears ring.
