For many centuries, it was a requirement for a planet to be fully scanned and plotted out for any signs of sentience and to make proper contact with the lifeforms first before trying to build a colony. After people began to notice that this protocol was more absolute paranoia than anything else, many (sometimes even lone explorers) would go off on their own to explore and colonize their own planets.

Generally speaking, there was a social system which all of these explorers had access to which displayed all of the others' information on previously explored territory.

However, there were some space explorers who ventured so far out away from everybody else that this system did not pick up on their whereabouts. For them, it was something like climbing Mount Everest, knowing that they had dared to go where no other human had gone before. Whether there were dire consequences to going out so far or not, nobody ever found out. The people who came back to tell their stories always had deep revelations to share, and those who didn't... well nobody ever heard from them again.

In this particular case, one such lone explorer wanders into a cave from which he may never return from. Or rather, he doesn't really see any reason why he should ever bother leaving.
