There are two components of your identity; the ego and the id. The ego is full of the stories you've told yourself to protect your pride, to be accepted by society, to appease those close to you. The id is who you actually are and what you truly desire when the ego is stripped bare. Your ego isn't completely useless, it's a survival mechanism after all. Yet it does nothing to serve me. I want the id; your true self when it's bare, raw, completely vulnerable. Your ego is disarmed before me so it's easy to draw out your true nature, your true self that no one else gets to see.
