In 1838 the young Hutter works in a real estate agency.
One morning his principal Knock receives a request from Transylvania from Count Orlok, eager to take a home in the village. The matchmaker decides to send Hutter to the Count to sign the deeds of sale, despite the fact that the journey to the Carpathians is not without its dangers. Hutter sets out on a journey, heedless of his wife Ellen's dark forebodings, leaving her in the care of her friend Harding and her step-sister until her return.
