The scullery maid is at the bottom of the servants' ladder. Martha is not very good at keeping her scullery clean and Caruthers, the butler, does not hesitate to thrash her bottom when he is not happy with her work. In the middle of one thrashing, the phone rings and he is called up to see her Ladyship urgently. He instructs the under-butler to finish the caning while he goes upstairs.
