By immobilizing the naked Langford in a standing position, then blindfolding her once more, the test officer increased her sense of vulnerability; once again she demonstrated little or no resistance to the officer's efforts. By threatening her with a candle flame, the officer succeeded in completely undermining Langford's morale. In effect, the candidate had now failed the field exam.
